The movie I am reviewing is The Spirit, directed by frank Miller. This movie is based on a hero named Denny Colt/the spirit, and his journey to unravel his past life, the mystery of how he had obtained immortality and finding his first love named Sand Saref, whilst fighting off the bad forces in Central City  and destroying his arch nemesis the Octopus.
What I love about Frank Miller films is there visual style, and how his movies feel like I’m watching a comic book unfold. His use of black and white throughout this film is great, and the adding of bold colour (the red in Spirit’s tie and the shining white of his sneakers) gives it that Frank Miller trademark, and gives the movie that edge and uniqueness. The 1950’s backdrop along with the characters costumes and wardrobes, mixed with new technology, gives the movie its distinctive tone, dark and sombre with a flare of brightness.
The element of the story that captured me was the idea of immortality, and how it would be used to conquer the world. The characters history was explained really well, and Frank Miller nailed the bond and love story between the spirit and sand saref. The octopus was a traditional villain in the way he wanted to rule the world, and destroy things that stood in his way.Overall the Spirit was an entertaining movie, enjoyable to watch and a few concepts that made me think about.
